A fear of the dentist is far from
uncommon; in fact, most Chicago residents experience some small degree of
nervousness or anxiety ahead of their annual check-ups, whether they suspect
something is wrong or not. While these patients go ahead with their check-ups
anyway and soon forget their racing hearts and sweaty palms, 10% of Chicago
residents are so utterly terrified of the dentist that they never set foot
inside a dental office, never mind seek the preventative treatment necessary to
keep one’s oral health in good stead.
Overcoming a phobia may seem like an
impossible task and one that is too much for the average psyche, but the
wonderful news is that if you have suffered until now, a fear of the dentist
doesn’t need to come between you and the treatment you need to keep your smile
healthy anymore! Sedation dentistry
is the modern solution to dental phobia and it has totally changed the lives of
countless Chicago
residents.
In this two-part article series, we’ll be
taking a look at…
What
is Sedation “Sleep” Dentistry?
To be sedated is to take a form of
medication that acts as a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant. This has a
calming, relaxing effect on the body and mind, which becomes somewhat detached
from reality.
“What sedation does is eliminate all
conventional fear triggers, so what might have caused you to become
panic-stricken before won’t even register whilst sedated,” explains an
experienced Chicago-based sedation dentist. “Regardless of what that fear
trigger was: be it the sight of a needle, the sound of the drill, feeling
“crowded” by the dentist and his or her assistant, or a fear of pain… the use
of sedation renders patients completely calm, peaceful and fear-free!”
How
is Sedation Administered?
Most Chicago implant dentists use three
primary methods of administering sedation:
1. Oral Sedation: The patient will take one or two pills
prior to their appointment or procedure. This is typically reserved for minor
procedures, for patients who have a weak gag reflex or for patients who are too
phobic to otherwise undergo treatment.
2. Nitrous Oxide Sedation: This involves the administering of
“laughing gas” via an oxygen mask. It has an immediate relaxing effect upon the
patient and is also good for minor procedures or addressing those with a weak
gag reflex or bad dental phobia.
3. Intravenous Sedation: I.V. sedation is administered directly
into the vein via a needle. This is typically used for more advanced and
complex dental surgeries and procedures that might be more invasive.
The precise method recommended to you
will be discussed with you prior to your procedure, so if you’d prefer one to
the other, you need only explain that to your dentist. Do note that not all dentists
in Chicago Dental Implants are
qualified to administer sedative medication. This requires additional and
special certification, so you will need to make the appropriate enquiries if
you wish to benefit from sedation dentistry.
